The Creation story is so full of holes it's surprising anyone buys it. Any intelligent person who understands science would never take it seriously. I'll break down Genesis 1 for you here: In Genesis 1:3-5 God apparently creates light on the first day: 3 Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light "day" and the darkness "night." And evening passed and morning came, marking the first day. But he doesn't create light producing objects (sun and stars) until the fourth day in Genesis 1:14-19: 14 Then God said, “Let lights appear in the sky to separate the day from the night. Let them mark off the seasons, days, and years. 15 Let these lights in the sky shine down on the earth.” And that is what happened. 16 God made two great lights—the larger one to govern the day, and the smaller one to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set these lights in the sky to light the earth, 18 to govern the day and night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And evening passed and morning came, marking the fourth day. We know this to be scientifically impossible to have night and day without a sun and the earth, but hey it's God after all and God can do anything regardless of how physically impossible, right? Also according to Genesis 1:16 God created greater light (the sun) to rule the day and lesser light (the moon) to rule the night, but modern science knows that the moon isn't a light, it simply reflects light from the sun: 16 God made two great lights—the larger one to govern the day, and the smaller one to govern the night. He also made the stars. Furthermore in Genesis 1:11-13 apparently God created plants on the 3rd day before there was a sun to drive their photosynthetic processes: 11 Then God said, “Let the land sprout with vegetation—every sort of seed-bearing plant, and trees that grow seed-bearing fruit. These seeds will then produce the kinds of plants and trees from which they came.” And that is what happened. 12 The land produced vegetation—all sorts of seed-bearing plants, and trees with seed-bearing fruit. Their seeds produced plants and trees of the same kind. And God saw that it was good. 13 And evening passed and morning came, marking the third day. In Genesis 1:16-17 God apparently put the sun, moon, and stars in the sky to provide light for the earth: 16 God made two great lights—the larger one to govern the day, and the smaller one to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set these lights in the sky to light the earth Modern science knows that only a few thousand stars are visible with the naked eye yet there are hundreds of billions of stars in our galaxy and a hundred billion or so galaxies. Were they all created "to give light upon the earth"? Seems a bit absurd doesn't it? I realize that many Christians do not take the bible literally, this is evident in the fact that there are over 34,000 different Christian sects. Obviously they can't agree as to what is written in their precious bible. That being said every one of them will say that the bible is the "Word of God" and if it is the word of their god, then how could he have gotten it so wrong? Not to mention the numerous passages in the bible that obviously state that the bible is round and flat, not a sphere. If this was God's word and he created the earth I'd think he'd realize that created a ball and not a pancake. jweston2: Reflections require an original light source. There would have to be something giving off the light being reflected. For example the moon isn't a light source, it reflects light from the sun. If the sun didn't exist the moon would not be able to reflect light from it. Naomi H: I love your "magic wand" answer. Being omnipotent your god can do whatever he wishes. Don't you people see that this is too easy? It's not intellectually satisfying because it sounds like a bunch of excuses. It's an excuse to prevent having to find a real answer by making up some imaginary supernatural all-powerful being who can do anything... even break natural laws. Science had found explanations which FOLLOW natural law. A God hypothesis is intellectually lazy. It says, "I don't know the real answer so I'm gonna say an omnipotent being did it so I don't have to bother to think about it anymore because thinking gives me migraines. It bundles it all up in a nice neat package that can't be questioned because God is the magic answer."... Read More »
